So I have an iPhone. And I love apps! In my downloading craze I found Instagram. At first I wasn't too thrilled with having to post my images to this other social media site, but soon I was hooked. The community I have found on there are supportive and creative and soon I was making art from my photos. Here are some of them.

Facebook that is.

Facebook was like cigarettes for me. I know they're bad, but damn it! It just feels soooo good! Except when it didn't. So I suspended my account.
I think my dislike for Facebook came around their first big overhaul of its image. And the birth of my daughter. I suddenly wasn't in all the pictures from the weekend before. And now I am feeling weirdly jealous about not going to the club that I didn't even want to go to in the first place. And article after article comes out about how Facebook is selling all your information. I have to change my privacy settings daily. Not to mention the fact that when I post a picture of Alice up, now I am sending it to 400 or so of my "closest" friends.
All of this makes me decide to go and delete everyone who doesn't mean anything to me. But then the politics of it come into play. I might not go out every weekend anymore but that doesn't mean I am never going to go out again. Does seeing these people out on a random Friday night constitute them being my "friends?" I can't bring myself to delete more then a hundred people.
I am convinced that Facebooks new goal is to make it as confusing as possible and bombard you with as much useless information about other people's day as possible. I realize I have spent so much time just looking at the same 10 posts. Or hoping that someone will comment on my post. I don't feel like I am anymore connected to the people I want to be connected to. Some of the people I am friends with, I love to hate. I watch them post bullshit all day long and I HATE them for it. I am purposely making myself mad. This leads me to ask the question, WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?
I realized that Facebook is a story. Its not real life in any way. I can only post smiling happy pictures of Alice and no one realizes that she can be a real brat. Just like the images of everyone smiling from their weekend photos. It doesn't even mean that they had a good time. They just smiled for the photo.

PLAYGROUP and other mom things

As I was peeing the other day with 2 pairs of tiny eyes on me, I realized I rarely get to go to the bathroom alone anymore. Sigh.
Alice and I are going to a play group today. I feel like its my first day of school, only I am MORE nervous now then I was before. What if the mom's hate me, or worse hate Alice? What if she's a monster and I run around the entire time, apologizing for her rude behaviour??
Alice is 13 months now, and all she does is make "MMMMM!" sounds and point at things she doesn't know the name of. I spend my entire day saying things like, "That's a _______" and then saying "You can't touch it, no sorry." and watching her cry.
What is it about me saying "NO!" that makes Alice want to do it more?
Oh toddlers.

Weening the babe

Ok, so weening. Ew, right? No one wants to hear about your boob problems. At least this is how I feel. Alice is 10 months now and I am ready to stop breastfeeding. We have a small cache of formula that we have been introducing into her cereal and we have started giving her whole milk (despite the doctors insisting she can't have it until she is a year old)
Despite the fact that Alice has been eating solids since she was 5 months old, she still has only slept through the night a handful of times. I am exhausted. I haven't gotten a full uninterrupted nights sleep in over a year. OVER A YEAR, people!
After many discussions with Phil, I have been weening Alice for the past 3 months. We are down to one feeding and I can't tell you how insane I feel right now. I am at the point where I hate breastfeeding, in its practice. Its draining and limiting and frankly, I have given this beautiful child my body for a year and a half and I want my body back.
So back to weening. I feel like the information out there on weening is the worst of all the baby information. I am a good googler, I have found a lot of information out there on how to up your supply, how to get rid of mastisis, how to get over all of the hurdles early breastfeeding has and I survived it ALL. My mom telling me to quit, getting a 102 fever on my birthday and ending up in the hospital, the sensitive nipples, the pumping, the refusal of my breast, then the refusal of any bottle ever made, EVER.
But-when I went to find out information on weening, this is where we are sadly lacking. Many lactation websites simply tell you, don't stop. Just keep on going. I'm sorry, I don't see anything wrong with breastfeeding past a year. But its simply not for me. She will no longer need it, she doesn't need it now, its simply a comfort and a time for us to bond. I truly feel that Alice and I have bonded. Its great. But tell me how to move on! Someone explain to me why I have had cramps on and off for months, why I get these great waves of depression coming over me for seemingly no reason. I can't say I haven't found any information at all, like the fact that you body produces oxytocin and prolactin and when you stop breastfeeding you stop making as much of these hormones, hormones that make you feel relaxed, happy, and connected to your baby. No wonder I am depressed!
But as far as what I can do to help my body regulate, I have found nothing.
I have also found no support for helping mothers ween. While there is a plethora of formula feeding support (we understand! You had to work, you had cracked nipples, you couldn't pump) and the same for breastfeeding support (you can do it! Just get over the first few weeks, it gets easier, it gets better) I can't find someone to say to me, Its ok you are stopping, you will feel better, you aren't doing anything wrong by quitting after a year.
It makes me hate the La Leche ladies, and the Kelly moms. Come on. Help a sister out.

My life on hold.

Having a baby changes things. This is an understatement, really. I feel like my life has been put on hold. I have had to accept this begrudgingly. Logically, I know that eventually, I won't be breastfeeding, she'll start walking and talking and I won't have to run the gaulmut to figure out why she's crying. Soon she'll enjoy spending the night at grandmas and I will get a night off to relax. But right now MY life has severly changed. 2 years ago I didn't start my night until midnight and now I am asleep by 11pm. I don't feel like I can relate to my party friends but I am not ready to be part of the stroller brigade. I want something else to talk about besides my babies pooping habits! I go on Facebook and see all of my friends weekend pictures them smiling in bikinis, their stomachs free of a slowly vanishing dark line and soft skin that my stomach has.
Like many times in the past, someday and soon I am sure my life will even out. I am sure I will never be satisfied being in bed by 9pm on a Friday night but I think the days of partying for 36 hours are over. And I know, that just before we found out I was pregnant, Phil and I spent many hours discussing how tired ofthe scene we were and how we wanted something more for our lives. We certainly got it. I would never trade Alice for a night at the club free of thinking about how she's doing and if she's crying. But I do look forward to a time where my body is my own.

scoop of sour cream
2/3 cup of peas

Being pregnant really does a number on your figure. And it makes me laugh when people are like, oh you will lose the baby weight, and doesn't breast feeding burn like a million and 2 calories every minute?? The truth of the matter is, that loosing 20 lbs isn't easy and yes you put calories into your breastmilk, about 20 per ounce. But I am in no way "burning" them. I don't have to raise my heart rate and frankly I am starving all the time because so much of what I am eating is going into producing food for Alice. And lately I have been making bad choices about food. Everyone around me is like, oh you're still skinny! Just eat it! Like that piece of pizza/brownie/whatever is the only bad thing that has tempted me all day! Come on!
Plus eating healthy means Alice is eating healthy and that can't be bad can it?
And since I just purchased part of my future bathing suit, and then I proceeded to eat like I was storing fat for the winter I decided that this week there will be no coffee, no booze, and (the big one) no sugar (besides fruit)
I will limit my intake of meat and I'm going to try to just eat a lot of vegetables. Here's to getting back to my pre-pregnancy size.
I will be back to blog about how it is going soon. I don't know how I am going to go all week without coffee but we will see!

I'm Addicted to Making Stars

I decided that I wanted to make some of my Christmas decorations myself. I was also feeling artsy or craft but I wasn't in the mood to get out all the paints and make that big mess.

I wanted 5 pointed stars so I set about to look up instructions for them. I finally found a website that had instructions on how to make them. Oh thanks Betsy Ross! (I now have this website bookmarked because I have had to search for it several times.)

I took some of the many baby magazines I have gotten for free since I had Alice and ripped out pages that I thought could make a good image on the star. Plus many of the magazines were about the holidays so that make for some cute stars. I also made a few plain white ones from some computer paper. I strung them together using thread (I wanted them to look like they were floating there) but you could string them with ribbon or even chunky yarn would look cute. You can punch the hole with a....wait for it....hole punch! I simply used a needle and thread to "sew" them together.

Here are the results from the first batch I made.

I decided I loved the way they looked so much, I went with my mom to the Hobby Lobby and bought some scrapbooking paper to make more of them.

And then, of course, once Nellie had seen them, she wanted some. She also recently moved to Logan Square to become one of my neighbors! (Yay!) And its her birthday coming up so I made her some like the good friend that I am.

I made Nellie's stars out of a Lucky Magazine and the others are made from the scrapbook paper.

Though I made mine for Christmas,they are still hanging in the windows. I think they are a great way to brighten up the winter.

Friday Night Vegan Cooking

My friend Beth is a vegan and was coming over for dinner on Friday night! I decided to cook up a delicious and simple meal. When cooking vegan I prefer to celebrate the vegetables and not cook fake meat.

I decided to try to make polenta and roast some veggies and make a tomato sauce loosely based on a recipe I found online.

I made the polenta very simply, I just added the corn meal to boiling water and whisked viciously. I put salt and cracked pepper in it and popped it into the fridge to solidify.

Next came the tomato and red pepper sauce. There's some basil, sage and a bay leaf tucked in there too.....

I simply added tomatoes and red pepper to a hot pot with some oil and water.

Then I let it cook down, gave it a quick whirl in the food processor, put it back on the heat, added the basil and sage and some balsamic vinegar then let it sit on low low heat.

Next came the roasted veggies. I cut them up, and coated them in oil. Then stuck them on our grill top for the oven.

And lastly came the return of the polenta. I cut it up and gave it a quick fry in a pan.

I know you can't wait to see it, so here it is. The end result!!!

and watch cooking shows. I started cooking at home more about a year and a half ago when Phil and I started to get serious. We started staying at home and I started cooking us dinner. It started out with easy recipes, I made a lot of chicken salad and mac and cheese. Then I realized I was gaining weight, and I started researching different more healthy recipes. I always kinda made things up as I went along but I definitely utilize epicurious and about.com for ideas and inspiration. Recently we went to eat at Lokal, on North Ave. in Wicker Park. They made a really good butternut squash soup that we had paired with a arugula salad with nuts and dried cranberries in it. I decided to create my own butternut squash soup and I have decided to share my recipe with you. Its not exact, but I will try to get it as close as possible. My recipe is not vegan, or even vegetarian, but you obviously could make it so if you choose.

Butternut Squash Soup

Ingredients
1 large butternut squash roasted in the oven and cooled and scraped out.
Brown sugar
Ground red pepper
Fresh basil or parsley
Crushed Walnuts or pecans
Dried cranberries
Heavy cream
Salt
Pepper
Toppings: (all are optional and you can use any combination of them)
Chopped bacon
Balsamic Vinegar Reduction
Creme Fresh or sour cream
Arugula

Stock:
a few cloves of garlic crushed up.
1-1/2 cup of carrots (i use whatever kind of carrot I have in my fridge)
1-1/2 cup of celery
1/2 cup of onion of any kind (I use shallots as I do not like other onion)
optional:
1/2 cup of any other hearty vegetable you have in the fridge, leeks, pepper, parsnips.

Heat up a large pot and put 1 tablespoon butter or oil and add garlic and soften the garlic, add the onion and a little bit of water and heat til the water boils out and the onion and garlic are transparent and soft. Scrape any brown bits up off the bottom of the pan and start to add the other vegetables. (I guess at this point I should say if you have a different or better stock recipe please feel free to use it, I just made this up, also if you have a better recipe send it to me, I would love it) and heat them. At this point I add water and fill the pot up and cover it. Let it come to a low boil then simmer til the vegetables are soft. I let the broth cook for at least 45 min. Once the broth is brown and the veges are totally soft, you can remove all the veges. I leave a few carrots in the pot for flavor.
At the same time I roast the butternut squash. I heat the oven to 375-400 and half the squash. I use about 1 tablespoon of olive oil and i rub it all over the squash. I cover it with brown sugar and then cover it with tinfoil. It should cook for about 45-1 1/2 hrs til its brown on edges and you can scoop the insides out easily.
Once the squash has cooled some you can scoop it out and add it to the broth. Heat stir in the squash until its is just small pieces are floating in the broth. Add some fresh basil or parsley, some brown sugar and some ground red pepper to taste. Heat for 10 min and then take off the heat and cool for a little bit.
Working in batches blend the mixture in a blender until it is completely smooth. I keep a little bit of canned or boxed stock nearby incase the mixture is too thick and I need to thin it out. You could use water too I suppose but stock has flavor and water, well doesn't. Place soup back in the pot and reheat. Add 3/4 cup of cranberries and walnuts to the soup and heat for about 5 more min. Then add 1/2-1 cup of the cream. Salt and pepper to taste. Ladle in to bowls making sure to get plenty of cranberries and walnuts. Top with creme, chopped bacon, balsamic reduction and arugula.

I started taking private art classes at the age of 7 and graduated in 2000 with a bachelors degree in Art Therapy from Barat College. Now I have been successfully creating, selling and currating art and art shows for the past 9 years in Chicago. Now I would like to pass my knowledge and experience on to you. So being an artist and having to purchase business cards is expensive, you want to give one to everyone, and you want it to be memorable....My friend Jesy gave me this idea and I love it, I take a painting, photograph it and using Picasa edit it so it becomes my card, it has all my info and people want to take them home because its a tiny piece of my art....its great!

I am in the works of starting up my own art classes. I am pretty sure I found a very nice loft spot in my good friends home(we are going to work out the details very soon) I am thinking of either weekly or bi-weekly classes that last 2, 2 1/2 hours in the evening mid-week. They would be beginners classes and would teach the basics while utilizing your creative talent. I would supply basic supplies pencils, paints, brushes, collage materials and even clay, (I even have access to a kiln), you would be responsible for bringing or purchasing from me the canvas/paper and you could also bring anything additional that you would want to use to make art.

I am really excited about this event. I recently started working with Bottles-Brushes and I love their grand Idea. To host private art lessons. Stephanie, the brains behind Bottles and Brushes supplies you with the canvas, the paints and the artist and you supply the party. Each artist come ready to teach you how to paint a painting in the time and you go home with your new masterpiece. Her first event is for I want to walk the talk, which is a non-profit that aims "to promote and advance health education by facilitating, organizing and directing activities that further an understanding of wellness in the community as well as wellness itself. In human language, that means that we’re wellness party planners with a philanthropic edge; we engage people to promote healthy lifestyles by creating a fun, community-oriented journey." The event is slated for Friday, May 1st and is $40 for non-members. By attending the event, you are also entered to win a spa day at the Spa-Chakra at the Palmer House......(followed by a deep sigh)The artist Lucas Myers will be the first artist teacher.

This was my very first attempt at risotto. To cook this fancy Itailian rice correctly you must have patience and good ingredients. I went with a more traditional recipe with Fennel and Leeks (which btw have a great oniony taste without being all in your face about it.) The basics of risotto are to first heat your veggies up and then remove them from the pan. You then heat up the rice with a good coating of oil on them then you add the veggies back and you start ladling in the chicken stock til the rice and veggies are submerged. You let it simmer until half of the stock has been absorbed and then you repeat. Do this til its at the tenderness you desire. Here is a pic of mine all done. I got the recipe idea from Lidia on PBS. She is awesome.

New Art Mmmm Mmm Good. Or at least I thought So......

Really Yummy Cabbage Dish I created

I'm Calling it Delicious Cabbage
This was enough for 3 servings(ish)

1/2-3/4 head of cabbage roughly chopped
1 Medium Fennel Bulb roughly chopped
1 medium tomato diced
2 chicken breasts cut into bite size peices
1/4 c Sausage broken up into bite sized peices
3 garlic cloves
Water
4 tbs butter
Salt and Pepper
A dash of crushed red pepper
Cumin

In a large frying pan with a tall lip heat butter and add minced garlic and all the meat cut into bite sized pieces. Start to brown, when half way browned add 2-3 tablespoons water and create some fond in the pot. Turn off heat and scrape up fond. Add cumin and the tomato diced. Turn on heat to medium high and add 2-3 tbs more water and create a fond again. Turn heat off and scrape up fond again.
Add the cabbage and the fennel and fill with water 1/2way. Turn heat on med/high and add oil and vinegar for taste. Cover and cook for about 15 minutes or until most of the water has boiled away. Serve over creamed garlic potatoes. Mmmm Mmmmm.

Hosted by Betty Brown and Gigi Deluxe: this month we will be showcasing Betty Brown our in house artists newest spring creations. besides her beautiful paintings we will also have some new spring accessories for us to feast on. Greg Shirilla will be showing at Fluevog a second time.

Gregs art is as straightforward as he is. Its charming, funny, and heartfelt. Lulu Callier and Dustin Mertz roommates and friends will be showing at Fluevog for the first time. They are both extremely talented young artists and I am very excited to see what they bring to the wall.

Also attending our soiree is House of Bias featuring their spring line of latex goodies. There will be a small fashion show along with pieces of last years items on sale. House of Bias is also introducing the collection Gigi Deluxe for House of Bias. House of Bias will be graciously donating 10% of all House Of Bias sales to Chicago Women's Health Center. You can also find ROBOTPANICMUSIC's newest cd release.

In case you're as vain as I am, GlitterGuts traveling photobooth will be there.

And as always John Fluevog lovely shoes will be on display and available to touch, oogle and perhaps even buy.

And how is winter treating everyone.....Just wanted to let u know that Betty will be hosting another lovely art show on the 6th of next month, which is coming up super fast btw! I can't believe we are already one month in 2009. Not that I mind, anything to get this weather over with!
Showing this month will be Jesy Grose who is a great artist. She has shown here once before and her whisimcal art will really grab ur attention. Plus if your budget is tight her art is super affordable.

Creamy Dreamy Broccoli Soup

I made this last week and it was the SHIT!!!

1 box of Chicken (or veggie) stock
3-4 cloves of garlic minced
1 shallot chopped (optional)
1 stick of butter
a lot of broccoli
I used a half a bag of frozen broccoli and one fresh stalk of broccoli
I saved the florets from the fresh broccoli and cut them making them very small and chopped the rest into 1/2in pieces.
3-4 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/2 to 1/3 cup of Sour Cream
1 cup of Heavy Whipping Cream
Salt and Pepper
2-3 tablespoons of flour

Get a large skillet with a high lip on it so you can add all the stock and the broccoli to it later and put it on a medium flame
Add half the butter and the garlic and the shallot cook them til they are soft and clear
Add all the chopped broccoli and the stock and bring to a boil then simmer for 20 min or so.
Let cool slightly and then blend in the blender in batches
I gave it a rough chop so there were still pieces of brocoli but you can make it smoother, I wouldn't reccomend pureeing it tho its nice to have the texture of the broccoli.
Put blended mix into a large pot and put it on a medium flame
In a bowl mix the sour cream, all but 3 table spoons of whipping cream and all Dijon and whisk it til blended but not too much or it will start to thicken. Add this to the large pot and blend together. Raise the heat and get it to just a boil then bring the heat down.
Mix the cream and flour to make a rue and add it to the pot and start it thickening. Then add the broccoli florets and cook until they are soft and the soup has thickened. Add salt and pepper to taste.

I added cheddar cheese to the bottom of the bowl and poured the soup on top of it.

This made a lot of soup (about 4 or 5 servings)

working hard for the money

I have been really trying to push lately to have a lot of stuff available for sale. I work my regular job at Fluevog (I do only work 4 days a week there usually, but it generally comes to almost 75 hours a pay period still!)
Then I come home and put in hours on the couch working my butt off on the Feathers, Paintings, New Ideas (which are some of my favourite things to do) and I do that for a few hours.
Sometimes I stay after at Fluevog to borrow the computer to promote for all this stuff I do and that takes a lot of time too! And the shopping at thrift stores and craft stores and fabric stores as well (not that I MIND this part either but still....)
Anyway I guess I am just saying I hope it is all worth it in the end....

This is our second show with Search, these nice folks assist the developmentally disabled in creating and selling their art....
All sales of any item goes straight to the artist. There will be a nice selection of all priced items and also John extends a 10% off any full price shoe for the hours of 6-9.

So I know I have told this story to a billion people but I still can't get over it. I'm walking down the street and there is a guy, my ageish, behind me and I hear him say "there are children present," excuse me....there are children present." I ignore him because he certainly can't be talking to me, and then I hear him say it again and I turn around thinking, really what can he be talking about? I say "excuse me? what did you just say to me?" and he replies, "you are dressed indecently, there are children present, its inappropriate." Well this mother fucker just started in on the wrong girl. I started walking towards him and I asked him "who the fuck are you? the fucking dress up police?" He says "well someone had to say it" and he starts crossing the street because he is afraid of me. I let out a string of cuss words and am flipping him off. Where does this lame reject of a human get off telling me how to dress?? I am wearing a 3/4 sleeve button up shirt and very very short shorts.
There are many things wrong with this that still boil my blood. First off, your a male in your 30's and you are yelling at a beautiful woman who is wearing shorts. You should have a boner dude. Secondly, were in wicker park, and yes I understand there are all kinds of yuppies and what not moving in here, but still, its a very liberal part of town and that is why i live here. I like to wear my short shorts, my onesies and not get yelled at by repressed retards in a bulls tee shirt. (yes folks, he was wearing a BULLS Tshirt) I am not in a middleastern country where I am required to cover my body. My body is beautiful and I like to show it off, I enjoy when other people feel free to wear whatever the fuck they want. I like that I live in the same neighborhood that the club kid who dresses up and puts rhinestones on his lips. Also, there was a park full of girls wearing bikinis! really, why did i get picked out? because i was on the street? because he secretly was getting a boner from watching my ass walk down the street?
What I really love is that what he did was WAY more innappropiote then what I was doing. I don't go around yelling at everyone I don't feel is dress right. I am open and while I may think many people are dressed like assholes, i don't go around hurting their feelings just because I don't like it.
So anyway, I just had to get it down on virtual paper.

Life is good lately. They turned the fountain on in Wicker Park. There was a couple necking under a tree. I had a beer with my coworker after work, went to a friends and watched wristcutters, got my scarf back, texted with my sweetie, took the train, worked on the piece of art that has been going very slowly and now I'm lying in my bed with the window open, nicely relaxed.
Its the perfect tempature outside and in my room. I like what I do with my time. Its not to say life is by any means perfect....in fact some pretty shitty stuff has happened, but I don't let it get me down. Or at least I try not to. Its been a good start to the spring. I'm super busy, and things are all moving in a good direction. That is all I guess. Xoxo

I do not like working on Saturdays. Early shoppers on Saturdays, old ladies and nerdy couples that go to bed at 8 pm on a Friday night. Its the worst kind of consumerism. Saturday is my day to brunch and drink with my friends continuing on the party from the night before. Instead I am couped up in the store while my friends call me asking me what I am doing, do I want to go to Forno? Thanks guys. Sorry I can't. I like working the Monday-Friday with the rest of the working masses, just not in a office.
My stomach cramps because of my hangover, because of my period, because I haven't been eating right or drinking enough water.
Masses of women shopping. Mac sits there and looks pitiful and adorable. His game works so very well, they all melt at first sight of that face. Mac with his big ears and his googlie eyes. He makes everyone fall in love. He follows them around with his ball begging for their attention.
The people outside don't look happy. Why would they be? They are awake and up and out way too early. Its cold and the sun only peaks out. Chicago sits on the edge of its seat waiting for this winter to break.
There aren't even that many people outside. Its depressing watching them all walk by with blank stares. They look for ways to spend all the money the work all week for. And I do it too.
My bank account is negative. I have no money for the week. Or next week.
